My path towards veganism began when I was a teenager. The thought of eating animals started bothering me at a young age, and at the age of 16, I became a pescatarian. After years of dealing with health issues associated with endometriosis, I transitioned to a vegetarian diet in my 20’s, but kept leaning towards eating more plant-based. When my husband and I were ready to start having children, all my research showed me that the best way to control my endometriosis was to eat plant-based. So I did some research, stocked my pantry, and stopped eating animal products. I felt great, got pregnant with our daughter, and then sadly went back to consuming dairy products shortly after.
It wasn’t until my daughter was born and we started our breastfeeding journey that I really started to consider my choice of consuming dairy products. My endometriosis symptoms had started to return, and I knew my body and conscience were telling me something. And then we had to consider what we were comfortable feeding our daughter when it was time to introduce food. I was very uncomfortable with the idea of giving her animal products at 6 months of age, if ever. My husband, who was very much a meat eater, and I decided that the best, healthiest, and most compassionate choice was to commit to veganism and raise our children the same way.
We started watching documentaries and reading about raising a vegan family, and the reality of the dairy industry completely shocked me. I had always defended my choice to consume dairy under the pretense that animals were not killed or harmed in the process, and I realized quickly just how wrong I was. I never realized how harshly cows were treated, how they were forcibly inseminated to keep them pregnant in order to produce milk, and how their babies were exploited. I did not know that their babies were taken away from them shortly after their birth and denied their mother’s milk and care. I didn’t know that cows cried for their babies for days after they were taken from them. But after learning all of this, as a mother, I could no longer support an industry that robbed mothers of this innate right to care for and feed their young.
As I sat nursing my daughter night after night, and day after day, I could not begin to imagine having that right taken away from me. Having my daughter strengthened my veganism and was my motivation for writing my children’s book, That’s not My Momma’s Milk! This board book celebrates the bond of breastfeeding between mother and child. No mother should have the right to care for and nurse her young taken away from them.
Embracing veganism is the best choice we ever made, and the only regret I have is not opening my eyes to the truth of the animal use industry sooner. We are a vegan family for our health, for the animals, for the planet, and for our children’s future. As I reach the half way point of my second pregnancy, I am even more grateful for our choice to live and raise our children in a compassionate way, and I am glad to contribute a resource to them and to other children that normalizes and embraces breastfeeding and veganism.
